Godly Sorrow is Just the Start

We started our second week of revival last night. Our evangelist, Bro. Crider, preached from Hebrews 11:23-26 "By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment.  By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;  Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;  Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward."  I can't remember his exact title but it was something like, "The Bottom Line."  We must look past the here and now to the reward at the end.  We had a beautiful move of the Spirit, with many lingering in the altars.

I was still thinking about it this morning while out running.  I was reminded of the verses in 2 Corinthians chapter 7.  We're well acquainted with verse 10, "For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death."  That is just the beginning of repentance.  Verse 11 tells what the real work of repentance is, "For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter."

I read through a number of commentaries, but Albert Barnes' Notes on the Bible broke this verse down so well:

For behold this self-same thing - For see in your own case the happy effects of godly sorrow. See the effects which it produced; see an illustration of what it is suited to produce. The construction is, “For lo! this very thing, to wit, your sorrowing after a godly manner, wrought carefulness, clearing of yourselves,” etc. The object of Paul is to illustrate the effects of godly sorrow, to which he had referred in 2 Corinthians 7:10. He appeals, therefore, to their own case, and says that it was beautifully illustrated among themselves.

What carefulness - (σπουδήν spoudēn). This word properly denotes “speed, haste;” then diligence, earnest effort, forwardness. Here it is evidently used to denote the diligence and the great anxiety which they manifested to remove the evils which existed among them. They went to work to remove them. They did not sit down to mourn over them merely, nor did they wait for God to remove them, nor did they plead that they could do nothing, but they set about the work as though they believed it might be done. When people are thoroughly convinced of sin, they will set about removing it with the utmost diligence. They will feel that this can be done, and must be done, or that the soul will be lost.

What clearing of yourselves - (ἀπολογίαν apologian). Apology. This word properly means a plea or defense before a tribunal or elsewhere; Acts 22:1; 2 Timothy 4:16. Tyndale renders it, “Yea, it caused you to clear yourselves.” The word here properly means “apology” for what had been done; and it probably refers here to the effort which would be made by the sounder part of the church to clear themselves from blame in what had occurred. It does not mean that the guilty, when convicted of sin, will attempt to vindicate themselves and to apologize to God for what they had done; but it means that the church at Corinth were anxious to state to Titus all the mitigating circumstances of the case: they showed great solicitude to free themselves, as far as could be done, from blame; they were anxious, as far as could be, to show that they had not approved of what had occurred, and perhaps that it had occurred only because it could not have been prevented. We are not to suppose that all the things here referred to occurred in the same individuals, and that the same persons precisely evinced diligence, and made the apology, etc. It was done by the church; all evinced deep feeling; but some manifested it in one way, and some in another. The whole church was roused, and all felt, and all endeavored in the proper way to free themselves from the blame, and to remove the evil from among them.

Yea, what indignation - Indignation against the sin, and perhaps against the persons who had drawn down the censure of the apostle. One effect of true repentance is to produce decided hatred of sin. It is not mere regret, or sorrow, it is positive hatred. There is a deep indignation against it as an evil and a bitter thing.

Yea, what fear - Fear lest the thing should be repeated. Fear lest it should not be entirely removed. Or it may possibly mean fear of the displeasure of Paul, and of the punishment which would be inflicted if the evil were not removed. But it more probably refers to the anxious state of mind that the whole evil might be corrected, and to the dread of having any vestige of the evil remaining among them.

Yea, what vehement desire - This may either mean their fervent wish to remove the cause of complaint, or their anxious desire to see the apostle. It is used in the latter sense in 2 Corinthians 7:7, and according to Doddridge and Bloomfield this is the meaning here. Locke renders it, “desire of satisfying me.” It seems to me more probable that Paul refers to their anxious wish to remove the sin, since this is the topic under consideration. The point of his remarks in this verse is not so much their affection for him as their indignation against their sin, and their deep grief that sin had existed and had been tolerated among them.

Yea, what zeal - Zeal to remove the sin, and to show your attachment to me. They set about the work of reformation in great earnest.

Yea, what revenge! - Tyndale renders this: “it caused punishment.” The idea is, that they immediately set about the work of inflicting punishment on the offender. The word used here (ἐκδίκησις ekdikēsis) probably denotes “maintenance of right, protection;” then it is used in the sense of avengement, or vengeance; and then of penal retribution or punishment; see Luke 21:22;  2 Thessalonians 1:8; 1 Peter 2:14.

In all things ... - The sense of this is, “You have entirely acquitted yourselves of blame in this business.” The apostle does not mean that none of them had been to blame, or that the church had been free from fault, for a large part of his former Epistle is occupied in reproving them for their faults in this business, but he means that by their zeal and their readiness to take away the cause of complaint, they had removed all necessity of further blame, and had pursued such a course as entirely to meet his approbation. They had cleared themselves of any further blame in this business, and had become, so far as this was concerned, “clear” (ἁγνοὺς hagnous) or pure.

There's a LOT of action in this verse.  It's not just a puddle of tears left at the altar, but work to remove the sin and not return to it.  It's no wonder that when a person truly repents the change is obvious!

Where Did September Go?

It's been almost six weeks since my last post.  We had a very busy end of the summer.  Les traveled to Philadelphia for work the last week of August.  We then enjoyed Labor Day at home - we even made s'mores in our backyard!

The day after Labor Day we flew to Hawaii.  DRC (Decision Research Corporation, Les' employer) celebrated 50 years of business and Les spent about 10 days in the office.  This was our first trip to the island this year - we've definitely missed it and our many friends, especially our First Church Hawaii Ohana.

We also enjoyed running and cycling.

Beautiful sunsets.

Friday night fireworks.

And a double rainbow!

We did not enjoy the fact that our Hawaii car broke down.  But God definitely led us to the right mechanic.  Sanchez Mobile Car Care came to us.  Jon was such a pleasure to work with and I immediately felt that I could trust him.  He had to replace the alternator and the starter, but his prices were completely in line with what we read online.  He had quite an office/diagnotics setup in his truck!

We got home from Hawaii Saturday morning, September 17th.  Victory Tabernacle Sunday school department hosted a Fun Day Sunday the next day.  The theme was Safari and our Sunday school department did an outstanding job!

We spent the afternoon outside - eating, fellowshipping and playing games.

The dunk tank was quite a hit!

Les had to fly to Las Vegas for a work conference the next day.  We decided I would go to Fresno on Thursday and he would fly from Las Vegas to Fresno on Friday morning when his conference was over.  We then drove home together.  I enjoyed some sister time!  I also saw my nieces and the sweetest little boy, my grand-nephew Bo!  (If you're local and want to see what he looks like, please don't hesitate to ask!)  Les got to meet Bo for the first time and Bo was fascinated with his great uncle!

No trip to Fresno is complete without a stop at Bravo Farms.  We had lunch there, then stopped at the fudge counter.  Whoever makes their fudge is a master!  The flavors are amazing.  We got Heath, Strawberry shortcake, Pralines, and Lemon meringue, because they always have "Buy Three, Get One Free."  Again, the flavors are amazing!

Last week we started revival with Evangelist Mike Truck and his wonderful family.  God is moving at Victory Tabernacle and we are thankful!

Happy New Year?

Can you see the moon?

I think this is the latest I have ever posted for the first time in a new year.  What happened?  I kicked off 2022 by running a half marathon on New Year's Day.  It was windy, but I got it done.  We started revival at church on Tuesday night, January 4th, and by the time we got home I was feeling feverish and achy.  I woke up Wednesday feeling horrible and so did Les.  Chills, fever, cough, the works.  We tested negative for COVID, so it appears we "just" had the flu.  The worst of it was over for me after a few days, while Les got hit a bit harder.

Last week I felt back to normal and revival continued at church.  This week started off good, then we got our COVID booster on Tuesday.  Like clockwork we both started feeling sick by that night.  This lasted about 24 hours and now the only thing left is a dull ache in my upper arm at the injection site.  I've told several people that we are just getting all the yucky stuff out of the way in January and now the rest of 2022 is going to be fantastic!

I went for a trail run this morning and it was wonderful!  We got a lot of rain in late December and a little bit this week so the trail is in fantastic shape.  I ran four miles before turning around.  All the pictures in this post are from this morning's run.  At about 4.6 miles I saw two cows - one on each side of the trail.  Neither of them were the least bit interested in me.

I finished 2021 down a total of 32 pounds.  I had been down 33 but picked up a pound over Christmas.  As of this morning I am down a total of 34.5.  One pound from the goal weight I set a little over a year ago!  It's been slow but steady.  I've enjoyed birthdays, weddings, and other celebrations.  We've traveled, eaten out, eaten pizza and ice cream.  What I've done is gone back to the basics of tracking what I eat and eating reasonable portions.  My running is better than it has been in years.

We're closing out our third week of revival and it has been so good. We've had many services where we just lingered in the altars.  God is still moving and I'm excited to see what He has in store for 2022!

2020 Review

Warning: Pollyanna post ahead!  That's right, I'm recapping 2020, but I'm only writing about the good.  None of us are going to forget what COVID did to 2020, but there was definitely some good thrown in.  Please don't judge me as insensitive.  I know it's been tough.  The losses have been tremendous.  In the past month four people I know passed away - two from cancer, two from COVID.  BUT GOD... GOD is still good!

January:
I started the year thinking I was going to study visions in the Bible, but turned to studying "fear not" after reading those words in four different passages in my Bible reading for the first two days of the year.
Les' nephew, Reece, spent a month with us.  He was in his senior year of high school and got a job working on the filming of a TV show in our town.  His hours were crazy, sometimes he'd go in at 3:00 p.m. and get off at 3:00 a.m. but we enjoyed having him and getting to know him a little better.

February:
We took a quick trip to Fresno to celebrate Elder Morton's 80 birthday.

I didn't blog about it, but we celebrated Valentine's Day in Hawaii.  Les had received a gift card from his trumpet student to Morton's Steakhouse and we really enjoyed ourselves!

March:
Sis. White asked me to speak at ladies prayer on March 10th.  I spoke about worry and the peace that comes from God.  Little did I know that God was preparing our hearts and minds!

April:
I read (and blogged about) Lessons from Pollyanna.  I guess you could say this post is about playing the "Glad Game."
We celebrated by 56th birthday and rode my age in kilometers!

May:
We celebrated our 29th anniversary by building a planter wall!  It was hard, back breaking work, but we also had a lot of fun.  We've lived in this house for almost 20 years and met more of our neighbors during that time than ever before.  We did what we always do - worked together and laughed a ton!

June:
For a few weeks we were able to have church inside again!  We still had to wear masks and social distance, but after months of online church it felt SO good to be together.

July:
We had unexpected visitors - our nephew, Reece, along with two of his friends were on a summer road trip and stopped at our place for a couple nights.
Our church had "Quarantined Revival."  We were back to online church, but that couldn't stop revival.  Only heaven will tell the story of what God did this year through online church services!

August:
We celebrated Les' 57th birthday with another bike ride!  My first 100 kilometer ride.  And a Bodacious Cinnamon Roll!!

September:
We began having church services in our parking lot.  Victory Without Borders brought our church back together again.

One of our nieces got engaged!
We also took a trip to Tennessee that I never blogged about!  We got to see Les' Mom and Pops, along with his sister and her family.  I flew home after a few days and Les joined Lance in Georgia for their delayed annual cycling trip.

October:
We did a few practice hikes in preparation for our November trip to the Grand Canyon.

November:
I got new hiking boots - purple, of course!

Our wall was finally completed!  We hired a contractor to do the finish work - stucco, caps, and stone work.  The first crew he sent made a mess of the stone so we had to wait a while.  The second guy was a master at his craft and it now looks awesome!  We're looking forward to Spring when we can do some planting.

We celebrated Thanksgiving in Arizona and I still haven't blogged about the Grand Canyon!

December:
After the Supreme Court sided with a Southern California church, Los Angeles county reversed its ban on indoor services.  We were back inside again for our final services of 2020!
Another one of our nieces got engaged!  Yes, that's right, TWO of our nieces got engaged in 2020!
Les and I had a wonderful Christmas at home - all our gifts were cycling, running or coffee related!

Les' new mug that says, "Fuelin' Up for Cycling"

I went for a nice walk this morning, under the light of a huge full moon!

Tell me something good about 2020!

Quarantined Revival

After about a month of limited services at church we are back to online only.  Before the restrictions hit again, Pastor White had scheduled a two week revival.  COVID-19 can't stop revival!  With about 10 of us in the building Tuesday night, we broadcast our first revival service with our evangelist Bro. Davis.

This revival seems to be a call to the backslider.  Bro. Davis' messages so far have been:

His messages are messages of hope for those who have gone astray.  His text Wednesday night was from Jeremiah chapter 3, with the key verse being verse 14, "Turn, O backsliding children, saith the Lord; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion."  He then took us to the book of Hosea, the story about a prophet who God told to marry a prostitute.  Not only did Hosea marry her, but he went after her when she returned to her old ways and brought her back again.  God wants to do that to every backslider.

Last night he preached from Amos 3:12, "Thus saith the Lord; As the shepherd taketh out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear; so shall the children of Israel be taken out that dwell in Samaria in the corner of a bed, and in Damascus in a couch."  Even when there is almost nothing left, the great Shepherd comes looking for the lost sheep.

Les and I were talking about Wednesday night's message yesterday and I wondered if this was God's way of reaching to backsliders.  People who have been gone for a long time that He still loves.  Maybe they're too ashamed to walk back into a church building, but God wants them back.  God is not constrained to a church building - He can work anywhere.

We may have been viewing the closure of churches as the work of men.  At times it has felt unfair and as a Christian I've wondered if we're being targeted.  Joseph said in Genesis 50:20, "But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive."  I'm believing that God can take any situation and turn it to good for the saving of souls.

If you are a backslider, or maybe you've just grown cold in your spirit, I encourage you to listen to these messages (the links above will take you directly to each message.)  Join us on Sunday as our revival continues.  Victory Tabernacle Church - http://www.victorytabernaclechurch.com/

Resurrection Power!

We had an amazing Resurrection Sunday!  We are currently in Hawaii and Pastor McGriffin was asked to speak/preach/teach to the Samoan congregation that meets in our building.  Their service starts at 1:00 and ours starts at 4:30 so it was a back to back kind of Sunday.  The Samoan Pastor and a few other members of their congregation have received the gift of the Holy Ghost.  They are hungering for more of God and asked Pastor McGriffin to preach on that subject.

The Samoan service was filled with worship.  It was genuine and I know the Spirit of God was in the house.  The Sunday school children did an Easter skit and one darling girl did an amazing job speaking bilingually.

Pastor McGriffin gave them the full gospel and then it was time to respond.  The people flooded the altars with hungry hearts.  They did not go home empty!  Eight people received the gift of the Holy Ghost!

While the service was winding down I noticed a young girl near me.  She continued silently crying and I could see that God was really touching her.  When I next turned around she was gone.  After the service I found her and had a sweet conversation with her.  My new friend is Mary Ann and she is nine years old.  I told her that I received the Holy Ghost when I was 10 and she wasn’t too young.  She touched my heart so much!  There was a tenderness about her.  I told Mary Ann that I am looking forward to the Sunday when she meets me between services to tell me that she received the Holy Ghost.

We are believing God for a great revival in this congregation.  There are so many hungry hearts and I know God is going to fill them.

We had about 45 minutes to catch our breath before our service started.  It was a beautiful Resurrection Sunday.  Our Sunday school department also did a great job.  The littlest ones sang “He Arose” and one little guy arose many, many times!  It was priceless.

I’m so thankful for the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.  The cross split time, but it’s the power of the resurrection that changes lives!

Blog Revival

McMoments and Memories, the blog you are reading right now, was launched on July 22, 2008.  Nine years ago I began this journey.  I've shared a lot, renewed old friendships, met new friends, and had a good time.  Hopefully I've shared something that has brightened your day or encouraged you along the way.

Lately, this blog has been sorely neglected.  I've only posted 38 times so far this year. In comparison, I posted over 300 times in 2009, 2010, and 2011.  McMoments and Memories is in need of a revival.

I've wanted to write more, but I just haven't been motivated.  I thought about doing a Photo a Day challenge, but that seemed like taking the easy way out.  So for the month of August I am committing to write a minimum of three times a week, with a goal of five times.  I found a writing prompt that I'll be sharing tomorrow.  I'll share the list for the upcoming week each Saturday.

I'd love to have company on this adventure!  If you're a blogger, please feel free to join me.  If you don't have a blog, maybe now is the time to start one.  I would especially love to read your comments.

We Have An Altar

Our stay on Oahu has been extended until February 17th.  That means a few more services at New Life Pentecostal Church.  We were pleased to see that Bro. and Sis. Robert Henson from Michigan are here again this year.  Last year he taught a series on "Intensifying the Fires of Revival."  This year the series is called "And So Much the More."

Tuesday night was the first of the series and the title was "We Have An Altar."  I'm very thankful that Bro. Henson had handouts prepared!  There were so many great points, here are some of them:

The Tabernacle teaches us the importance, positioning and permanence of the altar.  The altar was the focal point of the Tabernacle.

The Brazen Altar = the Altar of Burnt Offering
The first item you came to in the Tabernacle was the brazen altar.  This was the place of repentance.  Everyone has to start at the altar.  All true revivals began at the altar of repentance.  We need to visit the altar of repentance everyday, before we can move on to the altar of incense.

The Golden Altar = the Altar of Incense
The Hebrew name for the Golden Altar literally means altar of incensing of the incense.

Incense symbolized communication with God in the form of prayers, intercessions, thanksgiving, praise, adoration and worship.  Summed up, incense = worship.

Incense offered was the only sacrifice that was not tied to atonement for sin.  It was offered totally for God's pleasure, it was not a place for requests.

Too many people get stuck at the first altar.  Condemnation will bind us to the altar of repentance if we permit it to do so.  "The joy of the Lord is your strength."  Repentance is not your strength!  It is very important to move past the altar of repentance so we can worship!

According to the book of Revelation, there is only one altar found in heaven - the altar of incense.  There will be no need for an altar of repentance in heaven.

The altar of incense was the last item before the priest entered into the Holy of Holies.  True worship ushers us into the Holy of Holies where were are one step from the miraculous.

We had quite a time around the altar at the end of the service!  I don't know everything God did, but He was moving in a great way.

It Happened to Them, It was Written for Us

Victory Tabernacle has started the new year off with revival services.  Our evangelist, Bro. Waldrep, preached an incredible message on Tuesday night, the first night.  His title was "It Happened to Them, It was Written for Us."  All the great stories in the Bible happened to someone.  They lived those great moments.  They didn't know the end when they faced adversity, they lived it.  But they were written for us.  We can find hope and inspiration through these great stories.

Bro. Waldrep's text was from Acts chapter 12, when Peter was in prison.  The angel delivered him and he went to the home of Mary, the mother of Mark.  The church was there praying for his deliverance, but when he came to the door, they didn't believe.  They were astonished!  It's funny how we are astonished sometimes when our prayers are answered.

At the end of his message, Bro. Waldrep changed the wording in Acts chapter 12.  Instead of Peter, he used the word Revival:
5 Revival therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for Revival.
6 And when Herod would have brought Revival forth, the same night Revival was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.
7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon Revival, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Revival on the side, and raised Revival up, saying, Arise up quickly. And Revival's chains fell off from his hands.
8 And the angel said unto Revival, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so Revival did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.
9 And Revival went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.
10 When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from Revival.
11 And when Revival was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.
12 And when Revival had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.
13 And as Revival knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.
14 And when she knew Revival's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Revivalstood before the gate.
15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.
16 But Revival continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw Revival, they were astonished.
I love how he changed this passage!  I don't believe he misused the Word of God at all, but used it to strengthen our faith.  I don't know what you're praying for in 2016 - it may be a miracle, healing, a job situation - but have faith!  It happened to them, but it was written for YOU!

Being Truly Apostolic Pentecostal in 2016

We started the year off with amazing church yesterday!  Pastor White preached a fantastic message last night that I will blog about tomorrow, but I want to tell about Les' Sunday school lesson today.  The title was "The Pattern of Pentecost."  We read about a 3,000 soul revival and marvel, but what did that early church do?  Les presented us with 30 ingredients for being truly Apostolic Pentecostal.  He challenged us to check off those we are currently doing and make the others our goal for this year.  My list is in my Bible and I plan to review it often this year.

Here's the list with the corresponding verses from the book of Acts:
  1. Tarried (1:4)
  2. Continued with one accord (1:14)
  3. Continued in prayer (1:14)
  4. Continued in supplication (1:14)
  5. Filled with the Holy Ghost (2:4)
  6. Explained the experience (2:14)
  7. Taught separation (2:40)
  8. Gladly received the word (2:41)
  9. Were baptized (2:41)
  10. Continued in doctrine (2:42)
  11. Continued in fellowship (2:42)
  12. Continued in breaking bread (2:42)
  13. Wonders and signs (2:43)
  14. Sacrificial giving (2:44)
  15. Daily in the temple (2:46)
  16. Praising God (2:47)
  17. Grew daily (2:47)
  18. Hour of prayer (3:1)
  19. Personal witnessing (4:20)
  20. Spake the word (4:31)
  21. Spread the word (8:4)
  22. Sang praises (16:25)
  23. Readily received the word (17:11)
  24. Daily searched the word (17:11)
  25. Preached water and Spirit baptism (19:1-5)
  26. Practiced water and Spirit baptism (19:5-6)
  27. Worshiped  (24:14)
  28. Believed all things (24:14)
  29. Preaching the kingdom (28:31)
  30. Teaching with all confidence (28:31)
The last two items on the list were from the very last verse in the book of Acts.  Revival started on the day of Pentecost, but as the followers continued, that revival grew and spread.  I want that in 2016, how about you?

I Am a Revival!

We have enjoyed our time here in Oahu.  It was made especially rich by services at New Life Pentecostal and three special couples.   Pastor and Sis. McGriffin are such wonderful people.  I got to spend part of Saturday with Sis. Mac and the Sunday school department at the Honolulu Zoo.  Pastor Mac preached an outstanding message on Sunday night before they headed to the airport and General Board Meetings in St. Louis.

Retired missionaries, Robert and Dot Arthur, celebrated their 75th birthdays last year.  Their son generously gifted them with an extended stay here.  We met them on our first Sunday service and found out that Sis. Arthur's cousin was Bro. Orville Crabtree.  Bro. Crabtree was married to Les' aunt, Bobby.  We claimed them as family after that!  What a wonderful couple who has ministered all over the world, giving their lives for the cause of Christ.  Humble, kind and funny, we are just so glad to have met them.

The other guests were Pastor Robert and Shirley Henson from Flint, Michigan.  Bro. Henson had a burden for the islands and spent four weeks teaching "Intensifying the Fire of Apostolic Revival."  These services took place on Tuesday night and all of the churches on the island were invited.  We missed the first two but it was great to see the church full on the two nights that we were there.

The title for the final two lessons was "I Am a Revival!"  We have already been given everything we need for Apostolic Revival.  Satan uses numerous tactics in his efforts to hinder revival, they include:
  • Distractions
  • Disruptions
  • Discouragements
  • (The False doctrine of) Delay

The devil's Doctrine of Delay is intended to keep God's people always looking ahead to a future day and a future time for the release of revival.  He doesn't worry about us believing that revival is coming, as long as we don't grasp that revival is now!   We can counteract the devil's attempts to hinder revival by saying, "I Am a Revival!"  Say it as many times as you need to until you believe it!

Revival is released through prayer, fasting, faith and ministry.  John 15:7 says, "If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you."  This verse is not about our personal needs, but is directly tied to bearing fruit (John 15:2), bearing more fruit (John 15:2) and bearing much fruit (John 15:8)!!!

We Apostolic believers must become more spontaneous in ministry.  We are so concerned about being sensible, we have lost our sensitivity.  We need bold faith to be led by the Spirit of God (Romans 8:14.)

God wants to use YOU!  When God called Moses, He had already equipped him with everything he needed.  He asked, "What is in your hand?"  He's asking us, "What is in your hand?"  Everything you need is already available.

These services were so good!  And they reinforced what we've been seeing in Burbank.  We are in the midst of a greater revival than we've ever seen.  I believe Victory Tabernacle has embraced "lifestyle evangelism" like never before.  We haven't used the same phrase, but we are living proof that "I Am a Revival!"

God promised to pour out His Spirit in the last days.  Are you ready for it?  What is in Your hand?  What gifting and talent do you already have?  What could you do for the Lord if you would quit making excuses?  What could you do for the kingdom of God if you would place your all into God's hands?

I want to be part of this great outpouring.  I Am a Revival!

Tidbits from Genesis

I had this post ready to go yesterday afternoon.  Then we had church last night!

We are in revival with Evangelist Jason Hood.  His text last night was Genesis 3:1-6 (I love when God directs the preacher to what I've been reading!)  The title of his message was "First the Wedge, Then the Split."  Bro. Hood talked about how his dad would cut firewood.  He would place a wedge on a piece of wood, then hit the wedge with his ax and the wood would split in pieces.

The devil knows how to put a wedge in our life.  Once he puts a wedge in, he's coming to split us apart. In Eve's case the wedge was the fruit.  It caught her attention.  She started looking at it.  Then the serpent came in for the split - he caused her to question God's word.

There are many things that can cause a wedge:
  • Prayerlessness
  • Pride
  • Bitterness
  • Jealousy
  • Problems with the man of God
  • A fault finding spirit
  • Loneliness
  • Unbelief
  • Idolatry
  • Lust
We cannot be ignorant of Satan's devices (2 Corinthians 2:11.)  It is our job to recognize and shake off the wedge.

Pastor White closed the service talking about gossip and fault finding. "The edge of the wedge is often the tip of the tongue."

Back to my original post now...

As I mentioned yesterday, I'm enjoying "The Genesis Record" by Dr. Henry M. Morris. These notes are from chapter 5 "The Fall of Man" and chapter 6 "The Lost World," covering Genesis 3-5.  I'll have plenty to say about Eve and the Fall tomorrow.

Choosing Sin
No descendant of Adam (that's US) has ever lived to an age of conscious awareness of right and wrong without actually choosing wrong.  We have become deliberate sinners because we inherited a sinful nature.

The Shame of Nudity
Adam and Eve were conscious of being naked in God's presence.  The shame of nudity is not an artificial inhibition introduced by civilization.  It has its source in this awareness of sin.

The First Ten Patriarchs
I found this chart to be so interesting.  Adam was still alive when Lamech, Noah's father, was born.  In just ten generations "the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." (Genesis 6:5)

Goodbye 2014 ~ My 50th Was a Mighty Good Year!

I just want to spend a little time reflecting today.  I'm going through my posts of 2014 and am writing as I think, so this may be a little disjointed!!

I wrote my number one goal for 2014 on January 1st.  Based on Psalm 119:65:  "Love His Law, so that I will have Great Calmness of Mind; Leaving it All in God's Hands, I will be Kept Safe, and Nothing will Cause Me to Stumble!"  I have had many opportunities to be offended this year - more than any other that I can remember.  People have been cruel at times, but I have prayed and held on to the promise that as long as I love His law, nothing is going to cause me to stumble.

Of course the key in all of this has been spending time in God's word (loving His Law.)  I finished my Bible reading this morning.  My plan was to finish today - not in June!  My goal was to read my Bible EVERY day.  I think there may have been about 5 or 6 times that I got behind, but never more than a day.  Today's reading included:
Malachi chapters 3-4 - the Lord has certainly opened the windows of heaven in my life and poured out more blessings than I've had room to receive.
Psalm 150 - Let every thing that hath breath (that's me!) praise the Lord!
Proverbs 31:25-31 - Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.
Revelation chapter 22 - Even so, even so, come, Lord Jesus.
So many times my reading for the day was EXACTLY what I needed.  There have been several times when a message was preached and I have told Les, "That was in my Bible reading this week."  God's word is always new and rich.  I have also learned so much from the many commentaries in e-Sword.

Of course this year has been full of wonderful friends.  My friends far outnumber those who have hurt me.  It's easy to forget that when you're being hurt, but I am so grateful for so many.  Friends far and near who text, email, call, or leave blog comments.  Dear ones who see me at church and simply ask, "Are you okay?"  You'll never know how much you've helped me.

I am blessed to have two church families who are so dear.  Victory Tabernacle and New Life Pentecostal both seem like home to me.  Hugs and handshakes, smiles and shared prayer times.  God's family is the best!  Heaven is going to be an amazing, wonderful place.  I think the food will be delicious, too!

My health has been very good.  All my tests came back normal.  My biggest concern the past few years is always when I have my mammogram.  Mom was my age when her cancer was found, so I get a little nervous going in and rejoice when I get the notice in the mail that every thing is fine!  I've continued to run and ride my bike.  I finished my third marathon a few weeks ago.  I don't write as much about running here anymore, but if you want more (such as my training plans and weekly recaps) you can read them at McMarathon Moments.  It's private, but I'll happily send you an invite if you're interested.

We were so blessed to be able to attend Elder Morton's retirement service in March.  It was a wonderful evening of reflection, laughter and tears.  Outside of my family, his is the greatest influence on my life.  I've only been back to Truth Tabernacle once since then, but I am so happy to see the church continuing on in revival under the leadership of Pastor Tim Lackey.

I turned 50 in April and Les declared it was "50-50 Time."  From April 27th until August 18th, we would both be 50 and would enjoy as many 50-50 bar type desserts as possible!  Our favorite being shave ice with ice cream on the bottom.

One of the greatest parts of 2014 has been the tremendous revival that is taking place at Victory Tabernacle.  I don't know how many have received the Holy Ghost and been baptized, but I know it's more than we've ever seen before in a single year.  Nine children and young people received the Holy Ghost at Youth Camp.  Every service there are visitors and new converts. There is always someone to pray with in the altar and that is a beautiful thing!  I love sitting behind this little doll who has finally started smiling at me...

Les did a beautiful job remodeling our downstairs bathroom.  There really isn't anything he can't do.  Last week he completely stripped all the parts off one of his bikes and moved them to his other bike as an upgrade.

When we "moved" home in February, we really didn't know how often we would go back to Hawaii.  Our first trip was at the end of April.  We were only there about 10 days.  Les quickly realized that he needed more time in the office than that.  We then went back in August, October and December.  God has blessed Les in his job.  2013 was one of the worst years the company has seen, but 2014 was the best!  He was on a business call at 6:00 this morning and it looks like 2015 is going to be even greater!

I had a lot of fun hosting Flat Dustyn while we were on Oahu in October.  I loved this picture from his teacher - he is so fun and 100% boy!

I continued to find encouragement from Mom's Bible. It doesn't take the place of an actual conversation with her (I still miss those so much!) but it is a help. I've also enjoyed reading many books.  Top of the list for 2014 was "Run to Overcome" - lots of life and running lessons by Meb Keflezighi, winner of the 2014 Boston Marathon.

We spent some of the final days of 2014 on Maui, in our favorite condos - The Aston Mahana at Ka'anapali.  Each room is ocean front.  We watched giant sea turtles from our lanai, and on our final morning spotted whales in the channel between Maui and Molokai.  We saw them breach several times, something we didn't see on our whale watching adventure.  It was a special show just for us!

And finally, this guy:

There's no one I would rather spend my days with.  He works hard.  He loves me unconditionally.  He supports me and encourages me and prays for me.  He makes me laugh like no one else can.  I'm so blessed to be going in to 2015 with him!

Happy New Year! Wherever the road may lead, may 2015 be YOUR best year ever!
