Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low assembled 18 girls from Savannah, Georgia, on March 12, 1912, for a local Girl Scout meeting. She believed that all girls should be given the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. With the goal of bringing girls out of isolated home environments and into community service and the open air, Girl Scouts hiked, played basketball, went on camping trips, learned how to tell time by the stars, and studied first aid.
I've eaten and enjoyed my share of Girl Scout cookies through the years, but I must confess that as I child I was not at all interested in this organization...
I think I was in 2nd grade when I joined the Brownies along with several of my classmates. I wore my little brown uniform to school once a week (Tuesday if I remember correctly.) After school, we went to a nearby church for our meetings. We paid our dues, said our pledges, played games and made crafts. And I was bored silly! Really! I wanted to be at home riding my bike or tormenting my siblings or playing with the latest litter of puppies...
I don't remember exactly how long I lasted, but I do remember leaving a meeting and walking home one day. By myself. It was about 6 blocks and probably pretty safe back in the 70s, but still a major No-No! With a bit of convincing, surprisingly, Mom relented and let me drop out. Thus ended my career in the Girl Scouts of the USA!
