30 Days of Thanks, Day 24: Reflective
The event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in October 1621. This feast lasted three days, and, as recounted by attendee Edward Winslow, was attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims. The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating "thanksgivings," days of prayer thanking God for blessings such as military victory or the end of a drought.Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789, with a proclamation by President George Washington after a request by Congress. President Thomas Jefferson chose not to observe the holiday, and its celebration was intermittent until President Abraham Lincoln, in 1863, proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens", to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November. On June 28, 1870, President Ulysses S. Grant signed into law the Holidays Act that made Thanksgiving a yearly appointed federal holiday in Washington D.C.

30 Days of Thanks, Day 22: Constant
Why should I feel discouraged? And why should the shadows come?
And why should my heart be lonely and long for heaven and home?
When Jesus is my portion, my constant friend is He
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me
And I sing because I'm happy
I sing because I am free
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me
Let not your heart be troubled, His tender word I hear
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears
Though by the path He leads us, but one step I may see
His eye is on the sparrows, and I know He watches me
And I sing because I'm happy
And I sing because I'm free
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me
Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,
When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

30 Days of Thanks, Day 21: Regret
Les and I dated for fifteen months before we got engaged. We were engaged for six months. That's a total of twenty one months before we got married. I think we'd been dating about two months when people started asking when we were going to get engaged. One lady said, "I knew my husband for one week when we got engaged!" Sadly, that marriage didn't survive. While I was getting these types of questions on a regular basis, a wise person told me, "No one ever regrets waiting." Truly, there was no rush for us. Yes, we were "older" in the eyes of many - 25 when we met and 27 when we got married. But here we are after nearly 24 years of marriage and I don't regret a thing.

30 Days of Thanks, Day 19: Weathered
Les made many great points, but the one that stood out to me was from verse 22: "and straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship..." The disciples were exactly where Jesus wanted them and they still faced a storm!
It's so easy to question when we're in a storm. "Lord, I thought this is what you wanted me to do..." Just because a storm comes doesn't mean you're out of the will of God or that you've done something wrong. God knows exactly where you are. The same story is told in Mark chapter 6, verse 48 says that Jesus "saw them toiling in rowing."
Pastor Julio May from Memphis, Tennessee was in service with us last night. His message was "From Bad to Worse." Amos 5:19 says, "As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him."
Bro. May talked about how sometimes life can go from bad to worse, but then he made this statement: "When you're living for God, a bad day just means a better day is coming!"
As I played the piano for both altar services, I watched people who are going through storms. Unemployment. Sickness. Financial Strain. Things I don't even know about ~ but God was at work yesterday! They're still in their storms this morning, but I believe they woke up with hope instead of despair.
I know that there are people reading this blog who are in storms. Storms are part of life. While the disciples were still in the storm, Jesus said, "Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid." So remember, God knows exactly where you are in your storm today and a better day IS coming!

30 Days of Thanks, Day 16: Stillness
Still waters are hard to come by in our busy, over-scheduled lives. There is a place of rest in a busy and crazy world. We need both physical and emotional rest.
God wants us to have time to recuperate. We need times of recuperation.
We need to value hitting the pause button and taking trips by the still waters. We need to learn what it is to calm ourselves. When we're hurting and feeling stressed, we must find a place of rest. We need rest and calm to navigate life.
The opposite of still waters is a place of explosion.
God is doing everything to create a place of rest. The biggest mistake you can make is believing you can work through every problem of life on your own.
There is a great need for spiritual lifeguards. People who are looking for those who are drowning in the sea of life, who can bring calm to others. We can't do that if we don't have calm and rest in our own lives.
We have the ability to be calm and bring calmness. The church is a place of calmness. This is a place to come in and lie down.
There are times when we are so stressed, our thinking is so messed up, we don't think we can even pray.
When we are in stillness God can send things to cleanse us of the parasites of life. It takes the calm place to clean off what does not belong. We have to learn the value of quiet time, a time to take a deep breath, listening for the still small voice.
At this point of the lesson, the Great Shepherd, the Prince of Peace took over. There was such a beautiful, calming move of His Spirit that I put my pen down and closed my eyes, just listening to Pastor McGriffin. He continued teaching a few more minutes. The spirit in the building was so sweet as Pastor McGriffin began to sing...
Jesus, Jesus, JesusThe congregation joined in, singing softly with no instruments, but with such a spirit of calm. It wasn't a time to shout, but to quietly absorb the Word that was spoken. Pastor McGriffin closed with these words, "In a world spinning out of control, we need to find the place of rest in the calm of God."
There's just something about that name
Master, Savior, Jesus
Like the fragrance after the rain
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Let all heaven and earth proclaim
Kings and kingdoms shall all pass away
But there's something about that name.

30 Days of Thanks, Day 15: Brighter
During my early twenties as I waited for God to bring Mr. Right into my life, I started praying not only for my future husband, but for his pastor as well. I changed my list of things I wanted in a man to include "must belong to a good church" and even included a list of pastors that I felt I would be safe in their churches. When I met Les, and saw a future with him, I knew I was going to be in safe hands with Pastor White as my pastor - he was one of the pastors on my "list!"

30 Days of Thanks, Day 13: Faded
Les and I both remember our Sunday school teachers drilling into us "What will you do if your Bible is taken away?" This was during the Cold War (see, I really am old!) and the threat of communism was real. Thank you, Sunday school teachers for all those memory verses you put into me!
Other books were given for our Information. The Bible was given for our Transformation.
One who uses the Bible as his guide never loses his sense of direction.
The devil is not afraid of the Bible that has dust on it.
The Bible is meant to be Bread for our daily use;
not just cake for special occasions.
