Health Check

I had my annual physical last week and was very pleased with the results.  I am Vitamin D deficient, but other than that I'm good for another year.  I had my first ever bone density scan (now that I'm 50) and my bones are A+!  I attribute this to a good, but not perfect, eating plan and consistent exercise.

My Bible reading this week included 1 Timothy 4:8, "For bodily exercise profiteth little, but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and that which is to come.”

This verse has been used by many to justify a sedentary lifestyle.  When the Apostle Paul wrote that verse, there was no such thing as a sedentary lifestyle!  They walked everywhere.  "In the 2008 United States American National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) 36% of adults were considered inactive. 59% of adult respondents never participated in vigorous physical activity lasting more than 10 minutes per week." (Wikipedia)  That was not the case just 150 years ago.  Active lifestyle meant getting up before dawn to feed the animals, spending the day in the field or doing laundry by hand.  The entire family was included.  Modern conveniences were still in the future.

While trying to get more commentary on this verse, I found a fascinating site called Spirit Filled Fitness.  The article "Bodily Exercise Profits Little?" is so well written. It answers every question regarding this verse.  I can't do it justice here, do yourself a favor and read the whole thing (here clink THIS LINK.)  Here is just part of the recap:
  1. The Apostle Paul was warning the young Apostle Timothy of a heretical movement of philosophy known as Asceticism of the Roman-Greco culture that used severe austerity in subordinating the body to the control of the moral attributes of the mind.  This was the bodily exercise Paul was referring to and not the athletic boldly exercise of the Hellenistic culture (i.e. Olympic games, athletics, etc…).
  2. A deep and honest pondering of our heart and conscience in this hour can reveal to many of us that we have used this misquotation of “bodily exercise profits little” in excusing ourselves from really pressing in and dealing with the our lack of fitness and body fat mass index.  We have limited ourselves to not press pass our comfort zones because we might be displeasing God if we worked out too much during the week.  …Or we would be judged by fellow believers as spending too much time focusing on exercise when we had more important “eternal” issues at hand.
  3. This liberating truth can now set all of us free that bodily exercise whether it be manual labor or fitness orientated workouts is not only approved in the Scriptures, but is a highly employed theme for believers to engage in.  Not only are the health benefits optimized when our temples are properly taken care of, but also we learn many character issues about endurance, perseverance, and control that can be applied to encourage us in the mastery of our lower nature by the Holy Spirit and thus not become castaways in our faith (see I Cor. 9:24-27).
We must take care of our bodies.  Does that mean you need to sign up for a marathon?  No.  But taking care of ourselves means we will live longer and can do more for the kingdom of God.  Our bodies are not gods, but they are the temple of the Holy Ghost.  Christ dwells in us and we need to give Him a strong place to dwell.

I know that I feel better when I exercise.  My mind is clearer, my blood pressure is lower, I sleep better and I want to eat better.  You don't need to do a lot to make a big difference.  Start small and know there will be great rewards to reap.  Your bones and heart will thank you!

DQ and AMFM

Rainbow sighting at the end of my run this morning!
We have really settled in to our condo at Discovery Bay (I'm working on a grand tour post.)  I have found the perfect grocery/everything store!  Don Quijote has everything and the prices are great!  I've been calling it Don Q's, so it won't be confused with DQ (Dairy Queen.)  Soymilk was $2.97 at Don Q's, while it was $4.98 at Walmart.  It's a little over a mile from our condo, so I only buy what I can carry home.  I have made four trips in the five days we have been here!  Les went with me today (after a quick stop at Walmart) and we rode a taxi home with all our loot!

I also visited the Ala Moana Farmers Market (AMFM) today.  They had an interesting variety, but I can see that I need to get there earlier.  Hours are 8:00 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.  I didn't get there until about 10:30 and they were running out of some things.

I got some amazing peanut butters - banana macadamia and mango macadamia.  I also got Lilikoi honey and banana bread.  And those little beauties on the plate - Mmmm!  Basil, sun dried tomatoes and cheese wrapped in fresh croissants, pulled right out of the oven while I was standing there!

Have you ever carried groceries home?  How far did you have to walk?

2011 Mileage Report

I finished 2011 with a 10 mile bike ride this morning!  We have been having Spring like weather this week - highs in the upper 70s, lows in the 50s.  Here are my totals for this year, my highest mileage ever:

Running: 1209.72
Cycling: 1557.10
Total: 2766.82

I burned 208,947 calories over the course of these 12 months and weigh the same as I did a year ago!

It's been a great year in so many ways.  There have been lots of wildlife encounters (deer, bobcats and bears, oh my!)  We've been dusty and muddy.  There have been hard, hot climbs and fast, refreshing descents.  But more than anything, we've been healthy and blessed.

I've already told you my activity goal for next year (O2O Marathon).  What's yours?

Mileage Update

Here's another great quote from Runner's World:
I realize that I have been blessed with health and strength to overcome not only the miles on the road, but also to overcome the hard times in life when you want to throw in the towel. When I cross the line now, it is a celebration of the fact that I didn't quit.
~Tasya Lacy, U.S. Navy Human Resources Officer
Hebrews 12 has a little something to say about running:
1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
We can overcome any obstacle when we keep our eyes on the Author and Finisher of our faith!

Mileage Update

We've had a wild few days weatherwise. Santa Ana winds blew in on Tuesday evening bringing warm temperatures. Gusts of over 50 MPH knocked our power out over night and winds blew all day on Wednesday. A quick reversal took place and we got about a tenth of an inch of rain yesterday. It was 44 when I got up this morning!

My total miles for the entire year last year was 2357.6. I am currently at 2350.07! It's definitely going to be a record breaking year!

Totals for Week ending November 5:
Running: 30.48
Cycling: 30.82
Total: 61.30

Year-to-Date:
Running: 1072.27
Cycling: 1277.80

Don't forget to set your clocks back tonight! We have rain in the forecast ~ if it's dry, I'll be riding before Sunday school!

Mileage Update

October ~ the month of mood swings. Not mine, the weather's! Last week was so beautiful, rainy and cool. This week we were back up in the mid 90s with 12% humidity. It was 78 when I got up at 5:30 on Thursday morning. Come on, October, make up your mind!! It was an unusual weather pattern, normally when it is this hot and dry Santa Ana winds are blowing quite fiercely. There was very little wind this week. I'm thankful for that and praying for more rain. We're not out of fire danger yet.

Here's a great Quote of the Day from Runner's World that I have found to be true:
If you just give yourself a chance and get out the door, your mind and body will surprise you most of the time.

Time for Strength Training

Anyone familiar with this blog knows that I run and mountain bike. I would probably be considered healthy and fit. But I have definitely neglected strength training, especially upper body ~ arms, shoulders, back, etc.

Why do I mention this? I made homemade pasta yesterday. Without a pasta machine. I kneaded and kneaded and kneaded. Then I rolled and rolled and rolled. This is a very lengthy process ~ I've never done it before and I'm not sure that I ever will again!! I'll share the recipe on Friday.

My arms, shoulders and back are a bit angry with me today. Yes, it's time to add some strength training to my routine!

Mileage Update

I'm updating my miles today because it is the end of September. Also, I have plans tomorrow that do not include running or cycling so the number won't change.

It was a so-so week:

Totals for Week ending September 30:

Running: 13.77
Cycling: 41.37
Total: 55.14

But September was a great month! I've never gone over 300 miles in one month:

September
Running: 99.77
Cycling: 208.24
Total: 308.01

I will have to repeat that 300 miles a month (plus a little more) for the next 3 months if I want to hit 3000 for the year:

Year-to-Date:
Running: 970.10
Cycling: 1097.44
Total: 2067.54

Mileage Update

Oh what a beautiful morning! A crisp 54 degrees at 6:15. I can pretend that Fall is a season we actually experience when we have mornings like this. But I won't be pulling out my sweaters anytime soon ~ our seven day forecast shows highs in the 90s all week.

I woke up with a beautiful song on my heart this morning. I couldn't actually sing it while I was riding, but the words just kept rolling through my mind. Such a simple chorus, but words that mean so much:
There is power in the name of Jesus.
There is hope, there is strength, and victory to claim.
There is healing in his holy presence.
There is power in his name.
The only tracks on the trail this morning were a single pair of running shoes. So unless our bear got an order from Road Runner, I guess he hasn't been active this week. I think Les gave our Adult Sunday School class quite a scare last week talking about our wildlife encounters this summer ~ deer, rattlesnakes, and bears, oh my!

We finished another month... 8 down, 4 to go!

Monday Morning Math Class

I was flipping through a magazine the other day and read the following Fitness Q&A:
Q. Is it true that overweight people should exercise after they eat and that those who are healthy should exercise beforehand?

A. No. You should eat before and after you work out, no matter what your weight. About 1 1/2 hours before activity, eat an easy to digest meal or a snack of 300 to 400 calories. blah, blah, blah...
(Okay, I added the blahs!)

I shook my head when I read this advice. 300 to 400 calories seemed way too high. I researched a number of sites and here's what I found, (based on a 150 pound woman):

Daily calories needed = 1800 (that 300 calorie "snack" = 1/6 of daily caloric intake)

Calories burned in 30 minutes
Walking at 4 mph (15 minutes/mile) = 170
Running at 6 mph (10 minutes/mile) = 340
Cycling at 15 mph = 340

If you had a 400 calorie snack, then walked for 30 minutes, your net would be 230 EXTRA calories. No wonder people get frustrated when they start exercising and don't lose weight. Yes, you will burn more calories than if you were sitting on the couch, but not an extra meal's worth!

Hammer Nutrition suggests consuming 200-300 calories before an endurance event of 2 hours or more, consuming an additional 100-150 calories an hour after 2 hours. That same 150 pound woman would burn over 2000 calories cycling for 3 hours! FYI ~ Before my ride on Saturday morning I had one serving of Hammer gel for approximately 80 calories. It was plenty for a ride of just a little over an hour in which I burned 612 calories.

I'm not suggesting anyone become an endurance athlete ~unless you want to! I just wanted to share from experience how easy it is to overeat and tell ourselves "I exercised today." Please don't start with the "but muscle weighs more than fat" argument - go here for the truth! No matter how you count them, calories in versus calories out will determine weight loss, gain, or maintenance.

Class dismissed.

Mileage Update

It is HOT around these parts! 71 degrees at 5:00 a.m. is not normal for us. Shew! I had to get my riding in early.

Our bear was active last night ~ here are some fresh prints from this morning:

They aren't as clear as previous ones, but there has been a lot of human activity on the trail. I rode yesterday and those prints were not there. I'm sure he's looking for water in this heat. Hope he doesn't follow me home and decide to try out our pool ;)

Mileage Update

I don't consider myself to be very competitive. If I'm at a party or family gathering and someone pulls out a game, I won't be the one playing. I'd rather eat popcorn and talk! If I see a runner or cyclist up ahead, I don't try to catch them. But sometimes, it happens anyway...

Wednesday morning I went for a bike ride. I rode to the Y and turned around with the intent of going for a second lap. About 1/2 mile before my turn around, a fellow cyclist was coming up the trail. We exchanged good mornings and went on our way. I figured I would see him on his way back while I made my way up the second time.

I did my turn around and was feeling really good. About a mile later, I saw the other fellow stopped on a small rise looking around. I thought maybe he saw the bear. Just before I caught him, he took off. I was able to catch him and ask if he saw anything. "No, but I'd love to see the bear." We chatted for a few seconds as I slowly pedaled away from him. I did not change my pace at all, but still, I slowly pulled away. There's something very satisfying about that! Of course my ego was put back in place this morning when two guys quickly caught and dropped me!

Mileage Update

I tried to be a triathlete this week. Run. Bike. Swim. I'm not sure that what I do in the pool qualifies as swimming though! The early mornings have had the feel of Fall - low to mid 50s. So refreshing. But it's still heating up by 9:00.

No further bear sightings, although the signs are still up on the trail. I was happy to see a couple dozen people on the trail this morning. For now, I'll enjoy a little more company.

Mileage Update

I saw 14 yard sales in one neighborhood while I was running this morning! Is today National Yard Sale Day and nobody told me about it?? It was crazy. Yard sale shoppers are serious about this stuff. Cars were everywhere. My normally peaceful Saturday morning run was completely disrupted. I am not a yard saler, so my opinion is... one man's trash is still trash!

I thought "I should have ridden the trail instead." Then I came upon the trail head and there were a dozen cars parked there! Traffic jam on Las Llayas, too. Everyone is out today. It's a great morning for it - high 50s and slightly overcast.

Mileage Update

I did something today that I hadn't done in a LONG time - I ran a half marathon! I don't think I've run anything longer than 10 miles this year, so earlier this week I decided it was time to do one.

It was a perfect morning for it. 55 degrees when I got up, 59 when I got home. I watched the moon set as I ran towards the west for the first half, then watched the sun rise in the east as I headed home.

I wasn't as fast as I would have liked ~ I'm definitely out of practice when it comes to running long distances. I also couldn't remember how far to run before I turned around, since my route going home is slightly shorter. Here are the stats:

13.40 miles
2 hours, 23 minutes, 58 seconds
Average pace 10 minutes, 49 seconds a mile
Average heart rate 140, max 160
1348 calories burned

This is the elevation map. As you can see, it's a very hilly route! I was feeling it at mile 11 - that little uphill was hurting!

Mileage Update - HUGE Milestone!

Sometime in February, I said to Les, "I want to do a 100 mile week." He just looked at me and smiled, knowing that is something he does on a regular basis, often in one day. February came and went, with an abundance of rain and mud, no 100 mile week that month. More of the same in March, with some wind thrown in the mix. April came, still no 100 mile week. I was starting to doubt if it would ever happen!

I got up Sunday morning and decided THIS would be my 100 mile week! Each morning I got up saying, "This is going to be my 100 mile week."

Here's how I got there:

Sunday

Cycling: 14.23
Total: 14.23

Monday
Running: 5.91
Cycling: 10.22

Inspiration, Take 2

It seems that each new Runner's World magazine I receive brings new inspiration. I found two women in this month's edition that I want to introduce to you.

Kathleen Sebelius, 63, is Health and Human Services Secretary in Washington, D.C. She is also the former governor of Kansas. She has been running for 30 years, and currently runs five days a week. Here are a few quotes from her:

  • "I've got guys on the security detail that run with me. Over the course of a year and a half, some of them have had to stop running because of various injuries. I keep teasing them because I'm much older and I'm still running."
  • "Running is one of the most natural forms of exercise for kids. They start out running around, and then it becomes a great way to promote a regular routine."
  • "As you get older, you don't need to be fast, you just need to keep running."
And now, please meet Gladys Burrill.

Gladys completed December's Honolulu Marathon in 9 hours, 53 minutes, 16 seconds and set a Guinness World Record for the oldest woman to complete the distance. She is 92!!!! She ran her first marathon at age 86, this was her fifth. That means I've got another 39 years before I need to run my first marathon...

And I guess I can't say "Now that I'm 47, I'll need to slow down..."

P.S. May is Physical Fitness and Sports Month. It's already the 6th - what have you done to move more?

Mileage Update

I turned 47 on Wednesday, so I thought the appropriate activity would be to sleep in! Les then took me out to breakfast and that is the most distance I covered the entire day. I enjoyed it immensely. I did, however, make up for it the last three days. Thursday we rode to the base of the final climb of Las Llayas (a little over 12 miles), then headed to Santa Barbara. I walked all over Santa Barbara on Thursday. Friday morning I got up and ran 8 miles in Santa Barbara and did a bunch more walking. We came home last night and I got up and ran 9.19 miles today in lovely wind with gusts of 35 mph. Not bad for a little old lady such as I!

Totals for Week ending April 30:
