Specific + Believing Prayer

Genesis chapter 24 is the longest chapter in the book of Genesis.  Abraham's servant is sent to find a wife for Isaac.  Abraham knew that Isaac could not take a wife of the women of Canaan, so his servant was sent to Mesopotamia, the city of Nahor, Abraham's brother.  The Genesis Record describes the long journey and the burden on the servant to choose the right girl.  Upon his arrival, the first thing the servant did was pray:

12 And he said O Lord God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham.
13 Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:
14 And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.
15 And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out...

Here is what Dr. Morris had to say about this prayer:

This is a marvelous example of specific, believing prayer, an example that we can profitably follow today. It was not a presumptuous prayer; the servant knew he was following the Lord to this point, and his motives were only to do that which would honor God and accomplish the mission that the Lord, through his master, had entrusted to him. He needed definite guidance, not general direction, at this point. Therefore, he prayed quite specifically—a reasonable request, but one which would be most unlikely to come to pass without the Lord’s definite intervention. Today, if we similarly meet the conditions, we can similarly expect specific answers to definite prayer.

God wants to hear our prayers.   Sometimes we don't know what to pray for, but there are other times when we know the exact need or we need definite guidance.  That's when we should go boldly to the throne of grace.  He's waiting to answer, even before we're done speaking!
